Online Master of Science in Hospitality Management

Think about everything involved in running a hotel, entertainment venue, restaurant, or vacation destination. As an experienced hospitality employee, you understand the importance of streamlined operations, attentive service, and keeping guests happy. With the restaurant, events, and lodging sector predicted to grow significantly by 2031, the industry needs innovative management professionals to nurture and guide this progress.

Influenced by local trends, the University of Mississippi launched the online Master of Science in Hospitality Management to prepare existing mid-level industry professionals to lead the path forward or shape its direction through data, education, and thought leadership. Thirty credit hours focus on advancing hospitality, events, and foodservice knowledge, explore its overlap with business practices, and introduce essential research skills for making evidence-based decisions.

A flexible format allows existing hotel, restaurant, and events managers to fit the program around their schedules. Program completion will position these individuals for leadership or operations management, instructional roles, or industry research.

Why Earn an Online Master’s in Hospitality Management?

Ole Miss recognized the local hospitality industry’s dilemma: spurred by post-pandemic growth, foodservice entities, hotels, and entertainment venues have seen an influx of customers but often find themselves short-staffed. This trend affects all organizational levels, and in response, the online Master’s in Hospitality Management serves two functions: to build a clear pathway toward top-level roles and train existing management to define a route forward through data, evidence-based decision-making, and relevant business practices.

Overseen by the Department of Nutrition and Hospitality Management, this online master’s program:

  • Helps mid-level and higher hospitality, events, and foodservice professionals advance their knowledge and address current and future industry challenges
  • Introduces operational and analytical skills for making evidence-based decisions
  • Touches on the marketing, finance, and organizational behavior competencies required to lead hospitality entities effectively
  • Strengthens existing professionals’ decision-making, critical thinking, communication, analytical, and leadership skills
  • Is taught by experts currently influencing the field through research
  • Provides a lower tuition rate compared to other online hospitality management and Master of Business Administration programs and presents a career-boosting opportunity for utilizing employer-sponsored tuition reimbursement
  • Extends mentorship and research support to all candidates

Curriculum

The Department structures the online Master’s in Hospitality Management into two parts: across 30 credit hours, students complete an Administration and Research Core (nine credit hours) and a Hospitality Management Specialty Area (21 credit hours).

This sequence goes over management and systems in foodservice operations, the social and human science research influencing the industry, the use of statistics in conducting related studies, and financial management, marketing, organizational behavior, service quality management, and information technology techniques deployed in hospitality. In addition to exploring ongoing trends and future projections, students assemble a portfolio of real-world examples and successes to take their career to the next level.

In the process, all students:

  • Analyze, evaluate, and learn to make decisions based on industry literature and recommendations
  • Hone their oral and written communication skills to build connections with individuals, groups, management, and the public
  • Prepare to lead behavioral change and facilitate a positive environment based on effective management and education techniques
  • Refine their decision-making process to identify and improve existing hospitality concerns
  • Learn which theories elevate customer well-being, including individuals, groups, and organizations
  • See how management and business concepts shape marketing campaigns, program selection, and service delivery
