State Authorization Requirements for Distance or Correspondence Education

If you are a University of Mississippi (UM) student or prospective student who will not reside in Mississippi while enrolled in UM online programs, please be aware that many states have prescribed an authorization process for out-of-state institutions delivering online programs to its state residents. Through such processes, states strive to ensure quality postsecondary education, to preserve the integrity of an academic degree and to instill greater consumer protection for its student citizens.

UM participates in the National Council of State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA), which allows students from NC-SARA approved states to enroll in UM's online programs. If the state you reside in is not indicated as a NC-SARA state, please contact stateauth@olemiss.edu for updated information and the current status of your state as well as programs available for enrollment.

Complaints Procedure

The University of Mississippi seeks to resolve concerns and complaints in a fair and prompt manner. Current or future UM students who have a complaint may submit their concerns to the appropriate department. Before pursuing external options, students should exhaust internal avenues of complaint resolution. Read more about complaints.

International or Out-of-Country Authorizations

The University of Mississippi may not be able to accept online students from certain international countries or if they will reside outside the US during that enrollment.  In addition, while degrees conferred by the university are recognized in the United States, they may not be recognized in other countries.  International students are encouraged to research the policies pertaining to degree recognition in their home country, and to contact the program-specific administrator for additional information prior to enrolling in a online program.

If you have questions or if your online program is interested in recruiting outside the US please contact stateauth@olemiss.edu or Office of Global Engagement at oge@olemiss.edu

Relocation Policy

Please be aware that students who relocate while enrolled at the University of Mississippi may become ineligible for title IV funding or potentially be unable to complete their studies if they are moving to a country or state where the university is not currently authorized to offer an online option for a particular program or where the institution does not meet licensure or certification requirements. Prospective students should contact their admissions advisor to discuss how relocation could alter their eligibility, while current students should contact their program coordinator if they are considering relocating during their course of study.

Please contact stateauth@olemiss.edu if you have any questions.
